A Design Theory for Secure Information Systems Design Methods

2006

Many alternative methods for designing secure information systems (SIS) have been proposed to ensure system security. However, within all the literature on SIS methods, there exists little theoretically grounded work that addresses the fundamental requirements and goals of SIS design. This paper first uses design theory to develop a SIS design theory framework that defines six requirements for SIS design methods, and second, shows how known SIS design methods fail to satisfy these requirements. Third, the paper describes a SIS design method that does address these requirements and reports two empirical studies that demonstrate the validity of the proposed framework. peerReviewed

Life-Based Design

2016

Technical artefacts should exist to bring added value and quality to people’s lives. HTI design should, therefore, be considered in a much broader context than merely the usage of technology. It should be based on an understanding of people’s lives and well-grounded design methods and tools, which can investigate life and apply this knowledge to the design work. The conceptual model of life-based design (LBD) is based on segregating unified systems of actions called forms of life. Investigating the structure of actions and related facts relevant to particular forms of life, in addition to the values that people follow, is the core tool of LBD. The knowledge produced constitutes a template f…

LES DISCRIMINATIONS A L'EMBAUCHE DANS LA SPHERE PUBLIQUE : EFFETS RESPECTIFS DE L'ADRESSE ET DE L'ORIGINE

2016

Improving Teachers' Professionalism on an Experimental Basis

2013

International audience; While education economists have paid considerable attention to the performance of the education sectors, they have placed little emphasis on the management of the pedagogical process. In the context of developing countries, there are clear signs of weak management and too many school personnel neglect tasks deemed essential for student learning. Using data from a large - scale experiment conducted recently in Madagascar, thearticle analyzes the variations in impact of a set of management interventions designed to improve the engagement at work of public primary school teachers. While school - level interventions raise the teachers' level of professionalism on average…

Managerial Behavior in the Lab: Information Disclosure, Decision Process and Leadership Style

2019

This paper reports the results from a lab experiment in which subjects playing the manager role can implement either an efficient / inegalitarian allocation or an inefficient / egalitarian allocation of payoffs. The experiment simulates a stylized managerial context by allowing the manager to manipulate information and select the decision process and by allowing the stakeholders to retaliate against the manager given different choices in the decision process. We found that the inefficient allocation is often selected and that this choice depends on whether the employees can retaliate against the manager and on whether the manager can hide information about the payoffs. The social preference…

Stakeholder Strategy and Design Alignment Framework for Design Science Research – A Study in the Context of VR-Aided Marketing and Sales

2020

This study introduces a framework to align various perceptions and objectives that different stakeholders have at the beginning of a Design Science Research (DSR) process and consolidate them into stakeholders’ strategies and theory-ingrained design artifacts. We coin this framework as Stakeholder Strategy and Design Alignment (SSDA). As an application area, we concentrate on a Virtual Reality (VR) application designed for marketing and sales purposes. The empirical testing of the framework shows that the marketing and sales potential of the application are, indeed, perceived very differently among three stakeholder groups: company representatives, developers and customers. In addition to t…

Population targeted requirements acquisition

2018

ABSTRACTWe use social science theories, design science research methodology, and our experience in five development projects to design principles for selecting or adapting requirements acquisition (RA) techniques for use with populations of customers and users. The information systems (IS) literature has not systematically focused on the adaption of RA techniques to particular populations. We developed a nascent design theory for RA to target specific populations to define functional requirements for new IS. Five reference theories – personal construct theory, theory of disability, diffusion of innovations, social actor theory, and media richness and information synchronicity theory – suppo…

Identifying opportunities for AI applications in healthcare — Renewing the national healthcare and social services

2018

A vast variety of artificial intelligence techniques have been deployed to specific healthcare problems during the last thirty years with varying levels of success while there is a shortage of systematic matching of AI capabilities with the breadth of application opportunities. In this paper, we describe the process of identifying opportunities for deploying artificial intelligence to healthcare and social services on regional and national levels in Finland. The project involved a large number of stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds ranging from governmental agencies to entrepreneurs. The process described includes idea generation of an application or solution and its elaboration in w…
